Italy National Team: From Startup to Silver
Italy's modern lacrosse story now has a clear public face: a national team that moved from improvised beginnings to a European silver medal in just over two decades.
Italian lacrosse is young enough that its full national-team arc can still be read almost in one glance. From a first Roman team in 2003 to a European silver medal in 2025, the sport has advanced through a sequence of visible, traceable steps rather than one sudden leap.
The short history behind the breakthrough
The Italian timeline is unusually clear. Lacrosse Italia credits the sport's introduction to 2003, when Fabio Antonelli returned from the United States and helped form Roma Lacrosse Club. The federation FIGL followed on 1 June 2007, expansion accelerated through the Torneo di Roma in 2008 and the first official Italian championship began on 13 October 2009. In 2022, lacrosse was integrated into the Federazione Italiana Hockey (FIH), ending the standalone FIGL era and creating a dedicated Divisione Lacrosse inside the national hockey federation.
That administrative timeline matters because the national team has developed in parallel with the sport itself. Italy's first international appearance came at the 2004 European Championship, followed by a first men's world championship in 2006. The women's national team entered the picture in 2017. The result is a programme that no longer feels provisional.

How results started to catch up
For years, Italy's trajectory was one of gradual international accumulation rather than headline success: 11th at the 2004 Europeans, 10th at the 2006 World Championship, 13th at the 2012 Europeans, 16th at the 2018 World Championship and 11th for the women at the 2017 World Championship. Then the curve steepened. Lacrosse Italia records a ninth-place finish at the 2023 World Championship in San Diego as the best result in programme history at that time.
Two years later, that benchmark was surpassed. World Lacrosse reports that Italy reached the final of the 2025 European Men's Lacrosse Championship in Wroclaw and finished second after a 9-8 loss to Israel in the gold-medal game. World Lacrosse had already identified Italy as one of the first European teams to clinch qualification for the 2027 Men's Championship.
Why the national team matters so much in Italy
In mature lacrosse markets, club ecosystems often carry most of the sport's public identity. In Italy, the national team has played that role more strongly. It has become the clearest proof that the sport is real, organised and capable of competing with Europe's established names.
The World Lacrosse member page shows Italy joined as a full member in 2003, the same foundational year highlighted by Lacrosse Italia. That overlap captures the essence of the Italian story: the international framework and the domestic scene effectively grew up together.
The significance of the FIH integration
The 2022 move into the Italian Hockey Federation may prove just as important as any single tournament finish. Integration into an established national federation can stabilise governance, widen administrative support and strengthen access to recognition pathways that smaller emerging sports often struggle to build on their own.
If Italy can combine that governance base with the credibility gained from Wroclaw, the next phase becomes easier to imagine: better player retention, stronger domestic pathways and a national team less reliant on one exceptional cycle.
