Lacrosse in Hungary

Hungary’s lacrosse story begins with NLL broadcasts on television in 2008 — inspiring the founding of Budapest Blax Lacrosse — and culminates in hosting the 2016 European Championships in Gödöllő with 24+ nations competing.

The Hungary Lacrosse Scene

Hungary’s lacrosse origin is one of the most distinctive in European lacrosse. Budapest Blax Lacrosse was founded in March 2008 — directly inspired by National Lacrosse League games being broadcast on Hungarian television. What began as curiosity around a North American broadcast became the foundation of an ELF member federation, joining the European Lacrosse Federation in 2011.

The growth was rapid. In 2009, Hungarian clubs entered the Austrian Lacrosse League — their first taste of international competition. By 2016, Hungary was hosting the European Championships in Gödöllő, welcoming 24+ nations in what remains one of the largest European Championship events in the sport’s continental history. The Hungarian national team also participates in the Donau Lacrosse League, a regional competition connecting Austria, Hungary and surrounding nations.

Hungary continues to compete at the European level through the Donau Lacrosse League and wider ELF fixtures. The Heritage Cup 2025 men’s open saw Hungarian participation in a 32-team field (finishing 20th), reflecting continued engagement with international competition across both field and box formats.
