Lacrosse in Scotland
Scotland’s national lacrosse programme was born from the Lockerbie memorial partnership with Syracuse University in 1988 — and has since grown into one of Europe’s most distinctive programmes, with 8 clubs, strong women’s results, and an annual Home Internationals event.
The Scotland Lacrosse Scene
Scotland’s lacrosse programme has one of the most singular origin stories in the sport. Following the Lockerbie disaster in 1988, Syracuse University — which lost many students in the tragedy — challenged Scotland to form a national lacrosse team as a living memorial. That challenge was accepted, and the annual Scotland vs. Syracuse memorial match in Lockerbie remains one of lacrosse’s most meaningful traditions.
Scotland joined the European Lacrosse Federation as a founding member in 1995 and has been a consistent presence in the European circuit ever since. With 8 active clubs, a Home Internationals tradition, and a women’s programme that won a European Championship bronze medal at the 2024 EC in Braga — achieving a #10 world ranking — Scotland punches well above its size in European lacrosse.
In April 2025, Scotland hosted the Home Internationals (Apr 4–6), bringing together 16 squads from 6 nations in one of the British Isles’ most established annual events. Scotland plays field lacrosse and Sixes, and continues to develop both men’s and women’s pathways under Lacrosse Scotland.
